How to Play Pis Yedili

Pis Yedili, “the dirty seven”, is a Turkish shedding game in the same family as Crazy Eights and Mau-Mau. Everyone races to empty their hand, while sevens, Jacks, tens and Aces turn the game around.

Two players use one deck; three or four players use two decks.

Players:
2 to 4
Deck:
One deck, or two for three or four
Match:
Until someone reaches 101

Goal

  • Be the first to empty your hand. At the end, the lowest penalty wins.

Table layout

  • You are at the bottom with the others around you. The discard pile and the face-down stock are in the middle.
  • 2 players use one deck, 3–4 players use two decks.

Terms

  • Discard pile: the played cards. The top card decides what you can play.
  • Penalty: the points of the cards left in your hand.
  • Penalty round (Muamele): extra penalty cards drawn at the end by players still holding sevens.

How to play

  • Everyone gets 7 cards. No card is turned up.
  • Opening round: everyone's first play is a club. Jack, 7, 10 and Ace cannot be played in this round. Without a suitable club, draw until one comes.
  • Then play a card of the same suit or rank as the top card.
  • If you cannot or do not want to play, draw 1 card. Then play a fitting card or pass.
  • If the stock runs out, the deal ends with no winner. Everyone takes the penalty of their cards.

Special cards

  • 7: the next player draws 3. Answering with a 7 stacks the penalty (3, 6, 9…). The first player who cannot answer draws it all and plays on.
  • Jack: playable on anything, and you choose the new suit. It cannot answer a pending 7 penalty.
  • 10: the turn goes to the player on your left. Another 10 moves it further left. Then the turn comes back along the 10s and play goes on in the same direction.
  • Ace: everyone else draws 1 card and you play one more card at once. You cannot go out on an Ace.
  • Pişti: playing a plain card on its exact twin means you must play one more card, or draw if none fits. Not in the opening round.

Scoring

  • When someone goes out, the others take penalties for their cards: 2–10 face value, Queen and King 10, Ace 11, Jack 25.
  • Going out with a Jack doubles the penalties, with a 7 triples them.
  • Penalty round: for every 7 still held, pick 3 face-down cards. Every 7 picked gives 3 more picks. The picked cards' penalties are added.
  • The match ends when someone reaches 101. The lowest penalty wins.

Tips

  • Get rid of Jacks early when you can: a Jack left in your hand costs 25.
  • Keep a 7 to answer a 7. Without one, you draw the whole stack.
  • Going out on a Jack or a 7 multiplies everyone else's penalty, so it can be worth waiting a turn.

Controls

  • Tap the card you want to play. Tap the stock or Draw to draw, and Pass to end your turn.
