How to Play Pişti

Pişti is one of the best-loved card games in Turkey. It is a quick fishing game: you capture the cards on the table by matching the top card or by playing a Jack, and you score big when you take a single card with its twin.

It is played with a standard 52-card deck by two players, or by four players in two partnerships.

Goal

  • Capture cards from the table to score points. The first side to reach 101 wins.

Table layout

  • Your cards are at the bottom, your opponent at the top. With 4 players, the player across is your partner and the opponents sit left and right.
  • The table pile is in the middle with the face-down stock beside it.
  • Cards you capture build up in a face-down pile on your side.

Terms

  • Table pile: the cards in the middle. The top card is face up.
  • Capture: take every card on the table.
  • Pişti: capturing a single table card with a card of the same rank.

How to play

  • Everyone gets 4 cards. 4 cards start on the table with the top one face up. If it is a Jack, it goes back into the stock.
  • Take turns playing one card. A card of the same rank as the top card captures the whole pile.
  • A Jack always captures.
  • When the hands are empty, 4 more cards are dealt each. When the stock runs out, the cards left on the table go to the last player who captured.

Pişti

  • A Pişti is worth 10 points. A Jack taking a single Jack is worth 20.
  • Taking a single card with a Jack is not a Pişti.

Scoring (after each deal)

  • Each Ace 1, each Jack 1, 2♣ 2, 10♦ 3 points.
  • Most cards: 3 points. On a tie nobody gets them.

Tips

  • Keep your Jacks for a big pile. A Jack on an empty or small pile wastes its power.
  • Remember which ranks have been played. If three cards of a rank are gone, the last one is safe to lead.
  • Watch the 2♣ and 10♦: together they are worth 5 points.

  • Drag the top table card aside to see the card under it.
