How to Play Hearts

Hearts is a classic trick-taking game where you try not to win the wrong tricks. Every heart costs a point and the Queen of spades costs thirteen, unless you are bold enough to take them all.

It is played by four players, each on their own.

Players:
4, no partners
Deck:
52 cards
Match:
Until someone reaches 100

Goal

  • Avoid penalty points. When someone reaches 100, the lowest score wins.

Table layout

  • 4 players: you at the bottom, opponents left, top and right. There are no partners.
  • The 4 cards of each trick meet in the middle and then go to the winner.

Terms

  • Trick: one round in which everyone plays a card. The highest card of the led suit wins it.
  • Breaking hearts: the first time someone plays a heart.
  • Shooting the moon: taking every heart and the Q♠ in one deal.

How to play

  • Everyone gets 13 cards. First pass 3 cards: left, right, across, then no pass, in turn.
  • The holder of 2♣ leads the first trick. No hearts or Q♠ on the first trick.
  • You must follow suit. If you cannot, play any card.
  • You cannot lead hearts before they are broken (unless you hold only hearts).

Scoring

  • Each heart is 1 penalty point, the Q♠ is 13.
  • Shooting the moon scores 0 and gives everyone else 26.

Tips

  • Pass high spades and high hearts, but keep low spades: they protect you if the Q♠ comes to you.
  • Empty a short suit early. Once you are void, you can drop the Q♠ or high hearts on other players.
  • If one player is taking every point card, take one heart to stop them shooting the moon.

Controls

  • To pass, select 3 cards and tap the button. In play, tap the card you want to play.
