How to Play Solitaire

Klondike is the classic game of patience that most people simply call Solitaire. You turn cards from the stock, build down in alternating colours and move every card to the four foundations.

You can turn the stock one card at a time, or three at a time for a harder game.

Players:
1
Deck:
52 cards
Mode:
Draw 1 or draw 3

Goal

  • Build all 52 cards onto the four foundations, one per suit, from Ace to King.

Table layout

  • Top left: the stock and the cards turned from it. Top right: the four foundations.
  • Below: seven columns dealt 1 to 7 cards. Only the last card of each column is face up.

Terms

  • Foundation: a pile that starts with an Ace and builds up by suit to the King.
  • Column: where cards build down in alternating colours.

How to play

  • In the columns, build down in alternating colours: a red 9 on a black 10.
  • Face-up runs move as one block. Only a King can fill an empty column.
  • A face-down card turns over once it is uncovered.
  • Tap the stock to turn 1 card (or 3, if chosen). When it is empty, tap again to turn the cards back.
  • In draw 3, only the top card turned is playable.

Scoring

  • To a foundation +10, turned card to column +5, turning a card over +5, foundation back to column −15.
  • Recycling the stock −100 (draw 1) or −20 (draw 3). The score never goes below zero.

Tips

  • Turning over face-down cards matters most. Prefer moves that uncover a card in the longest column.
  • Do not empty a column unless you have a King ready to move into it.
  • Moving low cards to the foundations is usually safe. Higher cards can be more useful in the columns for a while.

Controls

  • Tap a card: it goes to its best place, or shakes if it cannot move. In Settings you can switch to “Pick & place”: the card lifts and you tap where it should go.
  • You can also drag cards: dropped where they fit they stay, otherwise they slide back.
  • The buttons at the bottom: rules, hint and undo. The menu at the top right has a new game, replaying the same deal and draw 1/3.
  • Once every card is face up, the game finishes itself.
